The harsh winters in Srinagar—characterised by freezing outdoor temperatures and intense indoor heating (bukhari or hamam)—strip the skin of natural lipids. A compromised barrier leads to severe dryness, flaking, and redness.
The Winter Shift
Your summer routine will not survive the winter. Here is what needs to change:
- Ditch the Foaming Cleanser: Switch to a gentle, hydrating cream cleanser that doesn't strip oils.
- Layer Hydration: Apply a Hyaluronic Acid serum to damp skin immediately after washing to pull water in.
- Upgrade Your Moisturiser: Move from lightweight lotions to heavy, ceramide-rich creams to lock in moisture and repair the barrier.
- Seal it (Slugging): For exceptionally dry skin, applying a thin layer of Vaseline or an occlusive ointment over your moisturiser at night prevents water loss while you sleep.
Don't Forget the Sunscreen
Winter sun, especially when reflected off snow, emits powerful UV rays. SPF 50 remains non-negotiable every single day.
