Preventative Botox: Is It Better to Start in Your 20s?

More patients in their mid-to-late 20s are asking for Botox to prevent wrinkles from forming. The concept of preventative neuromodulators is sound, but it requires nuance.

How It Works

Wrinkles form like creases in a piece of paper: fold it repeatedly, and the line becomes permanent, even when the paper is flat. Botox relaxes the muscle. If you cannot fold the skin repeatedly, the static line never forms in the first place.

Who Needs It Early?

Not everyone needs preventative Botox. It is beneficial if:

  • You have a highly expressive face and notice faint lines remaining for a few minutes after you stop smiling or frowning.
  • You have a genetic predisposition to heavy brow furrows.

When to Wait

If your skin is smooth at rest and bounces back immediately after expressions, you don't need Botox yet. Starting too early without necessity wastes money and can, over decades, cause muscle atrophy. A good dermatologist will turn you away if it's unnecessary.
