One of the biggest concerns patients have about hair transplantation is visible scarring in the donor area. The fear often comes from older FUT (strip method) surgeries, which left a linear scar across the back of the head.
FUE: The Micro-Scar Approach
Modern FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) does not involve scalpels or stitches. Instead, a micro-punch tool (usually 0.8mm to 1.0mm in diameter) extracts individual follicles. This leaves tiny, circular micro-wounds.
The Healing Process
These micro-wounds scab over within 24 hours and heal very quickly. By day 7 to 10, the scabs fall off, leaving faint pink dots that gradually fade to your natural skin colour over a few weeks.
Long-Term Visibility
FUE scars are essentially microscopic dots. Once your hair grows out to even a grade 1 or 2 buzz cut, the extraction sites are virtually undetectable. However, if you completely shave your head with a razor, very faint white dots may be visible up close.
Proper surgical planning—ensuring the donor area isn't over-harvested—is the most important factor in keeping the donor zone looking thick and healthy post-surgery.
