The Role of Diet in Skin Health: Fact vs. Fiction

The link between diet and skin is heavily debated online. While diet isn't the sole cause of skin issues, it certainly plays an inflammatory role.

Dairy and Acne: The Verdict

There is strong evidence linking skimmed milk (specifically) to acne severity. The hormones in milk, combined with its insulin-spiking properties, can trigger excess sebum production. If you have stubborn cystic acne, a 30-day dairy elimination diet is worth trying.

Sugar and Ageing

High-glycemic diets (sugar, refined carbs) cause a process called glycation. Sugar molecules attach to collagen and elastin proteins, making them stiff and brittle. This leads to premature sagging and wrinkling. Cutting back on sugar literally keeps your skin younger.

Water and Hydration

Drinking water is vital for health, but drinking 4 litres a day will not cure dry skin. Skin hydration is heavily dependent on the integrity of your skin barrier (ceramides, lipids) preventing transepidermal water loss. You need a good moisturiser to trap the water inside the skin.
